The Vagelos Computational Science Center (CSC), led by Interim Director Saima Akhtar and Faculty Director Rebecca Wright (PIs), spearheaded Barnard College’s application to join the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN). Barnard is now officially a PIT-UN member, opening the door for students, faculty, and staff to participate in PIT-focused programming, collaborations, and funding opportunities. What is PIT-UN?
The Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) is a fiscally sponsored project of the New Venture Fund (NVF), a 501(c)(3) public charity that supports innovative public interest initiatives. PIT-UN fosters collaboration across institutions through programs such as Tech for Change Hackathons, Regional Hubs, Working Groups, and other community-driven efforts.

What is Public Interest Technology (PIT)?
Public Interest Technology (PIT) is the study and application of technology to advance the public interest, generate public benefit, and promote the common good.

Inherently interdisciplinary, PIT brings together technical expertise with critical perspectives on the ethical, legal, policy, and societal implications of technological change. We are excited about the new interdisciplinary collaborations and opportunities this membership creates for the Barnard community.
